New York's Designers Revolutionising Fashion

3763 ratings | 71789 views
i-D crash lands into Manhattan during fall/winter 19 to celebrate the design teams that injected life back into NYFW. Brands like Telfar, Eckhaus Latta, Matthew Adams Dolan and Gypsy Sport have now cemented their place in New York fashion – growing from being labelled as emerging brands into globally renowned businesses. As designer Telfar Clemens puts it, “If you do come here and you do hustle, sometimes it really does work out!” Attitude, innovation and inclusivity. This is the new New York. It’s all been done before nothing new, just the same old recycled trash. If you look back through the years it’s always the same, it always repeats, nothing ever new. It’s always some “new” designer with some bullshit Blah Blah Blah, all the person did is copy something from 30 years ago before somebody else did and all these fashion weirdo freaks think it’s the greatest thing ever but it’s just trash

How exciting I must say I am so intrigued with the plant weaving and flower fashions that I have developed it takes much more skill and know how to hand make outfits out of plant fibers and flowers far more exotic than anything you people make but I will give you some credit for whatever it's worth you mainstream designers AR exploring new avenues perhaps you can put your skills up against mine

Diversity????? All I saw was a bunch of crazy over the top queens and black people. Seems as though in the pursuit of diversity these designers are eliminating many. Pethaps they should actually be diverse instead of just claiming that they are.

This is revolutionary?!?! Wow! Fashion is conservative. Drag race is on VH1 and is 11 seasons old. I knew people doing this London 10 years ago. Urban wear is not revolutionary, ask the creators of Supreme. It's a shame it's taken this long for fashion week to finally notice that Vogue, Prada and LVMH aren't the sole deciders of what and how we should dress.
Patsy Sadowski (1 month ago)
Soraya you clearly don’t have a passport. London is Grime. Not hip hop. London fashion is urban at its root definitely, all innovative fashion comes from the streets and yes we love Carnival and Jamaican influences in Grime and Garage that stem from the Jungle roots but to say just that would be ignoring the diversity London has.. But that doesn’t change what I originally said.
robin mcgregor (1 month ago)
+Soraya you are comically wrong.
Soraya (1 month ago)
Patsy Sadowski lol @ London started trends. Nah.. urban culture is far more influential. Anybody denying this has an agenda. Most of the London youth are inspired by Caribbean and hip hop cultures. Not vice versa.
Patsy Sadowski (1 month ago)
Paris and New York are giants in fashion but London has always started trends. Its Fashion Week is more accessible, street influenced and definitely more diverse.

I applaud the spirt and energy of these designers. And it’s time for something new and more forward thinking in fashion today as it’s become very tired and played out by the corporate brands. However, I am not seeing anything new or forward thinking here. These types of shows have been happening since the 80’s , in the sense that they are playful and interactive. The fashions itself look heavily referenced from the 90’s, so nothing new. Diversity in models has been a discussion on the table for years now, it peeked in the 90’s and then it all went away. Now body image is the talk of the day, but yet in an open casting, I still see the same type of body that is currently represented on the runways. Watching this, I can’t help but think, layer a couple of filters on this video making it look aged...slap a date from the late 80’s to mid 90’s on it and you have the same looks, same ppl, same conversations. Is anything really moving forward? Telfer is really onto something, the fashion world is not open to many. The art community is much more open to diversity. I would love to see shows in galleries and the opportunity to buy one of a kind pieces allowing designers to move forward and thrive. We have all heard the clique that fashion is a business at the end of the day, and it’s true is you want to pull a 100k+ year for a salary, but isn’t that just a box created by the corporate fashion bands and editors wanting to make money off the creatives? I get the sense they are bound by the conformity of the industry ...but remember as designers, models, creatives, etc if you don’t conform to the industry, the industry will have no choice but to conform to you. Reference the past if you must, but always move forward. Change is waiting to happen!
Me (1 month ago)
I agree with you, but fashion is cylindrical, we are always going to be recycling; whether it be from the 1700s or the 1990s. edit: As for the body types, I agree 100%... it`s ironic how they`re criticizing the big name labels and yet- they are doing the exact same thing. Yes, they are employing queer and multi-ethnic models, but the body type is identical to mainstream fashion brands (with a token plus-size model). Paired with a bit of self-laudation...

This makes me want to cry. So inspiring. But that person who said if we came to america of our own will this is how we would colonize. I dont think colonize is the right word unless they just meant it in a making our own space and culture to live in kinda way and not in a stealing and encroaching upon other peoples space and culture way.

HaBednarski (1 month ago)
All of you who say “Oh Models should be of all types!” No the fuck they shouldn’t. Models are meant to catch attention for a reason, thus why models are constantly either aesthetically unique, or unbelievably beautiful. That’s literally the point of being a model.

I can understand that and don't necessarily disagree. But these designers are claiming to be more inclusive and I think there are a lot of beautiful amazing people who aren't just under a certain age or have a certain shape. Beauty isn't an absolute truth, it's a matter of taste. Many beautiful people are being overlooked just because they don't fit in with , in my opinion, a quite narrrow idea of what is beautiful.
skander hamza (2 months ago)
I think a model's purpose is to be beautiful, and beauty come in every shape and every color so i don't want to see someone looking regular on a catwalk

thomas rangel I can’t tell what you’re saying in a part of this sorry
Teya Saadeh (2 months ago)
thomas rangel I get what you’re saying but I was just generalizing the fashion industry I doubt the people in the video can afford those brands.
Teya Saadeh (2 months ago)
thomas rangel I said “more expensive high quality”
thomas rangel (2 months ago)
+Teya Saadeh actually i think it doesnt apply to the people in the video, that are more about a visual movement than to wear clothes to last. they want what is fashion, and even sayin no , they are to envolved on this, the idea of belong a group! also expensive doesnt mean good, not at all, just a few few brands can use that, ... and most people dont have the option to choose between those two options!
Teya Saadeh (2 months ago)
On the other side of things by buying cheap low quality things you have to buy more often than if you were to buy more expensive high quality pieces. It kind of evens out tbh if you go about it right. Unless you’re buying off the runway or from an overpriced luxury brand that shits crazy.

Your mother's are gonna thank me!!! I am saying this with LOVE!!! Some of y'all need to sit down!!! Fashion isn't cheap. One thing that bugs me is the entitled models. Be kind to people. I am all for diversity. The loudness and the clowning. It can get outta hand. So please y'all wanna continue getting booked. Don't be too much. It can be disrespectful to other models. It's all about balance. A lot of these Queens ARE DOING too MUCH. I love them and I think it's awesome. Remember to balance your personality. Being diva in real is NOT cute. Be humble and kind.
Yves Tobon (2 months ago)
I feel like the underlining truth to any and all fashion is....people have to buy the clothing. The love the loudness and the gender defying fashion. But. If you can't convince people (especially people with money) to buy the clothing. What good is the clothing? I get the promotion of diversity and being all welcoming. But I do feel like some models are too much. 😕 I remember my theatre teacher once said, "art is still a buissness". And I feel like models should remember that.

Wow I love working in the fashion industry because I’m being apart of the change ❤️✨
Teya Saadeh (2 months ago)
abby iglesias I’m in Highschool right now but I’m working on opening an ethical/ sustainable online underwear store before I graduate. I’ll probably get a degree in software engineering and maybe double major or minor in business and then expand my business when I get out of college. I would love to go to school for anything related to fashion but I think software engineering would be more beneficial for my business because there’s a lot of money in software engineering so I could provide funding for my business and jobs in software engineering are pretty flexible. I may go back to school for fashion if everything goes well.
abby iglesias (2 months ago)
Teya Saadeh yes! Great outlook on it! Defiantly it is challenging I am getting a BA in fashion merchandise management and more and more it hurts to see both the business and the fashion industry impact and once you dig deep to what the industry has done to our environment. A lot of unethical choices were made from product sourcing to even the face and vision of brands but with our generation getting more knowledge we have a power to change it into a positive! ✨
Teya Saadeh (2 months ago)
The fashion industry makes positive change but a lot of negative change depending on your view. I love this side of fashion but sadly a lot of the fashion industry isn’t like this and even this side of the fashion industry has problems with environmental issues and human rights in other countries. It’s unavoidable sadly but we should all strive to be better. I wish every stage and aspect of the fashion industry was empowering to everyone and little by little we are getting there
