Hey Erica! Thanks for such an informational video! One question, if I plan purchasing my items from Paris, then take the train to London and fly home from London, should I get my tax refund while in Paris or in London? Also, are there places that do on the spot VAT refund? I heard Le Bon Marché does that, is it true?
Sarah Ngo (2 months ago)
Great. Erica
NewYorkPrincess22 (2 months ago)
If you go to the Global Blue website it takes all of the guess work out of how much VAT you will get back. Just pick the country, add in the price of the item and it automatically calculates it for you. So you can do a comparison for several different countries right on the spot.

Thank you so much for this video. It is so informative! I am planning a trip to Paris in May and was trying to decide between LV and Chanel, between prioritizing slgs vs bags. You answered absolutely every question. I will factor in the import duties and now know to focus on. LV bags. Love, love, love this video!❤️❤️❤️

I saw a youtube video where an American was talking about trying to buy a Birkin in other European countries besides France.  Excluding France, she basically said that it is impossible to buy them there unless you live in that country particularly Italy.  The SA said they want to sell Birkins to the locals before selling to any foreigners but with the long wait lists, it's practically never going to reach down the list to the foreign customers.  From what I remember, walking into a store to try to buy one is even harder.  However, correct me if any of this is wrong.

Hi Erica new to your channel . Thank you thank you. My son and his girlfriend are going to France in March. I was going to give some money to purchase a bag for me in France from Chanel . Watching this videos has change my mind going to give him the money for Hermes thank yo again great video xoxo. From NYC Marlene
Ericas Girly World (8 months ago)
Welcome to the channel! I am so happy you found it! I am glad you enjoyed the video! I only prioritize Hermes and LV when traveling abroad. Definitely the beat savings :)
lvinyyc (8 months ago)
Awesome awesome video. I would throw Heathrow in the mix too because even though selection is limited, if they have the LV or Chanel you are looking for then straight away 17% VAT is deducted making it way better than the 10% off of retail if you buy in London.
Wealthy Penny (8 months ago)
It took me a while to watch this video because I know from experience, Paris is the place to buy luxury goods. And it’s so true, you can pay for the rest of your trip with the money you save, totally worth it. I love your spreadsheet, my mind works in spreadsheets! Thanks for sharing your handbag math!

M (8 months ago)
wait but if you get the vat refund and then declare the item and pay the import duties, don't you end up paying the same or even more?
Ericas Girly World (8 months ago)
F - by applying for VAT refund and then paying import duties, the final price will be the original price you paid at the store. For example, if the bag was a 1,000 euros at the boutique, the Vat will give you about 100 euro refund. Then when you get to the US you will pay about 100 euros in import duties. So in the end, the Vat and import duties cancel each other out. But the original price of 1000 euros is still cheaper than the US prices so it is still worth it. I hope I wasn’t too confusing! :) Thank you so much for watching!

Sloane DeRothschild (10 months ago)
My favorite places to shop in Paris are Galeries Lafayette, Printemps & Bon Marche because you can get your VAT refund in cash the same day. It genius cos you'll most likely put that VAT back into their economy. Also you'll discover this while you're in Paris that Chanel raised their prices to match US prices. So I only shop there now to find things I cant get in the states. Hope youre having wonderful time in Paris, bon shopping cherie
msmaka (10 months ago)
Thank you, Erica. This is fantastic. This breakdown helps put things into financial perspective when investing in a luxury item. But really, you make me want to hop on a plane to Paris and shop.!

Monica Chavez (10 months ago)
Asia is expensive but the good thing is there is a wide selection just because of the number of boutiques. I live in Seoul and from what I can remember there are six Hermes boutiques (including a flagship that has the full collection), plus duty free shops both in the city and at the airports. Chanel and some other brands have started harmonizing their prices around the world, so the last couple of purchases I made at Chanel in Seoul were actually cheaper than they would have been in America. (So now whenever I visit the States and make up my wish list, I have to do some sleuthing to see whether I'll actually be getting a better deal over there.) And of course if you are an international tourist you can get the VAT refunds.
Monica Chavez (10 months ago)
And also! Many places in Seoul will offer payment in installments if you have a local cc, just like in Brazil. =)

Also, thank you for making this video!!!
Meiraf Tesfaye (10 months ago)
Shopping in all countries in the world...ignores a whole continent ...side note, I have been to both Paris and Italy, prices are much cheaper in Italy though I don't own anything fancy like Hermes I do know that they have better prices in Italy 😀
Meiraf Tesfaye (10 months ago)
I actually meant Africa
Ericas Girly World (10 months ago)
Meiraf Tesfaye - there always has to be someone to complain. How many youtubers that you know have spent hours and hours doing calculations just to help people? If you are speaking of Asia, I have already said that I have not been there (therefore I am not speaking about something I am not knowledgeable on) and second, it is common knowledge that Asia is the most expensive continent to buy luxury.. Always some ungrateful ass people out there. Appreciate all this information you are getting for free without touching a calculator....
Dubai Silk Route (10 months ago)
Your video is very informative, and well put together, especially with the spread sheet; however, I was disappointed because Dubai was not included. There is no sales tax in Dubai.

Virginia Dusi (10 months ago)
Being from Milan, I have to partially disagree. Of course if you are looking for Chanel, Dior, or Hermès you will find the best selection in Paris, because these brands are French! Nonetheless, you will have a way deeper selection of Gucci, Versace, Armani, Max Mara, etc in Milan; Burberry in London and so on. You are just talking French brands...
Ericas Girly World (10 months ago)
Virginia Dusi - I disagree. I was recently in Milan, Rome and Venice and the selection for brands like Gucci, Fendi and Dolce Gabbana was about the same if not slightly worse than Paris. The only one that was clearly better was Moschino. You have to realize that in Paris you almost always get a better selection because of the sheer quantity of stand alone boutiques and department stores. In Milan for example, you can only hit Via Montenapoleone or a couple of department stores like La Rinascente and that is it. And the department stores are much smaller in Milan. You have big flagship boutiques like Fendi in Rome but still cannot compete with several boutiques in Paris plus the huge department stores...

Hi Erica,I am planning to visit paris this summer. My question is if I buy there would I be able to exchange or return the item when I come back to canada in louis vuitton store here? or if anything starts peeling say like pochet metis glazing starts to come apart would i be able to repair or exchange in canada if bought in france? Thanks! Love you❤️
Ericas Girly World (10 months ago)
Hi there! Typically you cannot return an item purchased in a different country but you can definitely do repairs. If anything goes wrong with it, typically LV will take care of it regardless of where it was purchased so you can rest assured that the LV guarantee is valid. Hope this helps!

Seriously, if you ever teach a uni class you'd be the hottest teacher around! Anyway, thank you for doing all the maths, I always thought Australia is a lot more expensive. One thing to note is if you buy LV from the Heathrow airport shop, you save a whole 17% of the VAT. They have pretty limited stock, but there's a good chance you'll find the basics. I live in Indonesia where the prices are crazy and the import duties even crazier, so I always buy overseas whenever I could. If your currency is stable like the USD you probably won't have to worry about it so much, but overseas prices for me can vary a lot depending on the exchange rate. One time I lost 20% buying Gucci from HongKong (traditionally cheaper compared to Indonesia). My advice would be to call and check to compare prices before buying!
