What does my headscarf mean to you? | Yassmin Abdel-Magied

10766 ratings | 495394 views
Unconscious bias is a prevalent factor driving culture, causing us all to make assumptions based on our own upbringings and influences. Such implicit prejudice affects everything, and it's time for us to be more thoughtful, smarter, better. In this funny, honest talk, Yassmin Abdel-Magied uses a surprising way to challenge us all to look beyond our initial perceptions. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). "Lack of opportunity is due to unconscious bias" - PROVE IT. A big statement like that needs big proof. The anecdotes which (supposedly) demonstrated unconscious bias were unconvincing. The idea that we should find someone who is "on the opposite end of the spectrum" is itself biased. Let's simply respect everyone as individuals and forget this concept of unconscious bias until there is some evidence.

"50% chance the woman would progress from the preliminary stage" out of how many... almost tripling the chance is good but when you think about that... thats only 14 percent. Was the ratio of aplicantes 1:1, so many variables. Don't take this at the face value it is intended. Ted is for introducing people to these ideas for the first time opeing the door. But so often this will just be repeated like a click baited article title. I dont agree with it but dont site her as your source look into this stuff yourself, directly from the "1952 boston orchastra experiment"

Unbelievaball (1 month ago)
Absolutely nothing... whereas the diatribe that spews forth from your uninformed brain & your insistence that Sharia Law would be a better alternative to our current systems is outrageous - "Don't be dissin' my faith!"? - while, typically, she & those like her rant & rave about various Western traditions including trashing Anzac Day are more than abhorrent... look it up. She had the audacity to suggest that Shariah Law would be the best system re; supporting Feminism... WHAT? That's a glaring example of her ignorance & inability to research reality. So glad she left Oz.
Gunther Vincent (1 month ago)
For me, the headscarf means that the person wearing it - most probably - believes 1) that there is a god who created the IMMENSE universe with billions galaxies, each with billions of stars and planets. 2) that that SAME god has enough time and interest in HER person to care and check every day and every night what SHE is doing, eating and wearing and 3) that she confidently calls that concept, idea and attitude "modesty".

What it represents is this: that men cannot fundamentally control their sexual urges when they see exposed hair. That is the reasoning within the scriptures. If the reasoning were different or even if there was no reason, I think it would not represent patriarchy. I’d like to discuss and explore this opinion however with anyone who would like to offer alternative views. Dialogue is key to true understanding. ✌️

Why would you take of the hejab to satisfy their desire and Allah said -2:120) And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, “Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.” If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper

Of course in western world you have plenty of opportunities, and you, the presenter, is a prove of that, the problem is that your religion denies the opportunities unless you are Muslim, your religion doesn't accept people who are not Muslims, they divide the society in believers and non believers, the latter must be segregated, punished and even killed. you said that variety is magic, but you can do that in the western world, try to practice different religions in Muslim countries, the fact that you use veil means that you agree with all that barbarian demands and you want that the rest of us must abandon our values(humanists) and create a Muslim society as Saudi Arabia or Iran, well let me tell you Muslim lady, I will not be submissive or a slave or your god, and I will defend my freedom and those who love freedom with all my energy and passion.
Louise Fox (6 months ago)
She looks very beautiful with the scarf and what she is wearing. She can choose to wear what she wants, as long as it is a REAL choice. But should she CHOOSE to relinquish her politics/religion (because that is what Islam is - it is a form of government, and a barbaric and archaic one at that) then she will stand a very good chance of being killed. So does she REALLY have a choice? And by upholding the Islamic ideology, she is supporting Sharia law, violence against women, female genital mutilation, terrorism, fascism, no freedom of speech, no right to choose a husband, polygamy, racism and the push for a worldwide Caliphate. She might not agree with all these things but the very fact that she is a Muslim is SUPPORTING this ideology which is very clear in the Koran. And its VERY important to read the Koran in the correct chronological order and not the order in which most of the public Korans are. Personally, I don't want to deal with someone if I can't see their face. I personally find the full covering to be totally ridiculous and stupid. But that's MY culture and MY feeling.

What I hate the most about these Islamic TED talks are the titles. What does the headscarf means to you? Or What do you think when you look at me? I don’t care 🤷‍♀️ about what others think about me when they see me as Muslim woman or what they think about my hijab 🧕. I’m really sick and tired of this hijab talks or me explaining to others why I dress in certain way. If they think that I’m terrorist, brainwashed and oppressed my only respond is KEEP THINKING THAT WAY

When I see a woman with a head scarf I think of this......................."Islam has permitted the child marriage of older men to girls as young as 10 years of age if they have entered puberty. The Seyaj Organization for the Protection of Children describes cases of a 10-year-old girls being married and raped in Yemen, a 13-year-old Yemeni girl dying of internal bleeding three days after marriage and a 12-year-old girl dying in childbirth after marriage." When are you going to denounce Islam as an EVIL SCOURGE which subjugates and sacrifices its young children as promoted in the Quran?!. ............instead of glorifying a silly headscarf! .

It was never established that unconscious bias is the total problem. Also, if we all suffer from bias, Yasmin may be suffering from confirmation bias.
chaiTV (10 months ago)
So cringey in her smugness and self-importance. It's obvious that completely covering one's face and walking around in public, all in the name of a custom invented by men in flat-earth religious times, is not welcome in society where most people are not governed by supernatural stories. "I'm a Christian scientist, please give me a job"... Um, if I was the recruiter I'd put your resume on the bottom of pile, not because of unconscious bias, but because religious faith is not compatible with science. Same deal if you're muslim. You complain about division and bias, yet every day you step out the front door you make sure you look different to "non-believers". You walk around showing everyone you're Muslim, but actually you're showing others that you're *not one of them, you're not a NON-BELIEVER*....That in itself is creepy. Your choice to do it, but don't call out others for being creeped out. The division comes from YOU not others.
John Hiatt (10 months ago)
It's stated Google diversity study shows 61% white (Angol), 30% Asian eh? Is this a bias given asians make up ~5% of the United States. At what point does diversity reach the utopian number? Is it when organizations are representative of the society? If so then there should be 70% white or the argument could be made that whites are the victims of unconscious bias. Or is it 10% Anglo, 10% African, 10% Chinese, 10% Arab, 10% American Indian, 10% Hispanic etc... Merit is the only non angled answer where if not selected there is a justifiable grievance. Getting HR departments to pick on true merit is the real challenge.

You should be proud to be human before muslim. How about proud to be a member of the wider community you live in, regardless of their religion? Muslim always put their religion first before anything, which is sad and selfish.

This is idiotic. Shes using her outlying tendencies to fool people. People assume the surgeon was male because 80 percent are, its an educated assumption. The ftse 100 isnt lead 50% by minorities because the uk is 87% white. That would be stupid to assume it needs diversity beyond the racial makeup. Talk about a bias, shes biased to anything that doesnt fit her agenda of forcing diversity.
It means oppression and darkness.

Isn't TEDx supposed to be about progression? So why is an islamist given a stage where she can defend backwards patriarchal practices? Yassmin Abdel-Magied is "feminist" who sought advice from islamist extremists of Hizb ut-Tahrir for fucks sakes. You know, religious fascists who've defended child marriage and wive beating in the past https://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/feminist-activist-yassmin-abdelmagied-sought-advice-from-hizb-uttahrir/news-story/8fb7d208cfac65646173cc3a4180c1a2
