Iran's Fashion Renaissance: VICE Reports

10:18
Click here to subscribe to VICE: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE Before Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, citizens weren't required to wear the Islamic cover known as the hijab and the country's fashion was almost identical to that of the United States and Europe. After the revolution, though, the hijab became required by law. Although the standard black hijab is still commonplace—especially in rural areas in the country—Iran has recently seen a fashion renaissance, and cities like Tehran are becoming home to new and innovative designers. The clothing may still have to respect the Islamic dress codes, but the bright colors and designs would never have been seen a decade ago in Iran. Last summer, VICE went to Tehran to attend the third annual Fajr Fashion Show and speak with some of Iran's new designers. The country's top officials—responsible for granting permission for the show—were all seated in the front row to show show their support. And to make sure the models were adhering to the country's law. Top fashion designer to design Modi’s wardrobe

02:55
When it comes to dressing up, most Indian male politicians have a wide range of clothing to choose from, as long as it's a white kurta-pyjama made of khadi. For added variety, there's the Nehru jacket, and for trips abroad, a bandgala in black or grey does the trick. Indian male prime ministers have never been known for their flamboyance (think Manmohan Singh) but when it comes to packaging and presentation, Narendra Modi has few peers among politicians. Having marketed himself with resounding success as a no-nonsense man of action with his half-sleeved cotton kurtas, he is ready now for the role of global statesman. In his first important overseas visit, to the BRICS summit at Fortaleza in Brazil, Modi didn't experiment too much with the template of the Indian dignitary abroad, shedding his traditional kurta-pyjama in favour of the bandgala. But he may be planning a bigger sartorial splash for his trip to the US, the country that famously denied him a visa but has now opened its arms wide welcoming the Indian prime minister. In charge of the wardrobe change is Mumbai-based fashion designer Troy Costa. The designer's clients include the Bollywood Khans and members of the Ambani family. Ashish Soni, known for his bespoke suits, says professional advice could do wonders to boost Modi's image. A fashion show is an event put on by a fashion designer to showcase his or her upcoming line of clothing during Fashion Week. Fashion shows debut every season, particularly the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter seasons. This is where the latest fashion trends are made. The two most influential fashion weeks are Paris Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week, which are both semiannual events. Also the Milan, London and Berlin Fashion Week are of global importance. In a typical fashion show, models walk the catwalk dressed in the clothing created by the designer. Occasionally, fashion shows take the form of installations, where the models are static, standing or sitting in a constructed environment. The order in which each model walks out wearing a specific outfit is usually planned in accordance to the statement that the designer wants to make about his or her collection. It is then up to the audience to not only try to understand what the designer is trying to say by the way the collection is being presented, but to also visually deconstruct each outfit and try to appreciate the detail and craftsmanship of every single piece. A wide range of contemporary designers tend to produce their shows as theatrical productions with elaborate sets and added elements such as live music or a variety of technological components like holograms, for example. A fashion week is a fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, which allows fashion designers, brands or "houses" to display their latest collections in runway shows and buyers and the media to take a look at the latest trends. Most importantly, these events let the industry know what's "in" and what's "out" for the season. The most prominent fashion weeks are held in the five fashion capitals of the world: Milan, Paris, New York, London and Berlin. Some other notable fashion weeks in the world are held in Amsterdam,[1] Bangalore, Barcelona, Boston, Buenos Aires, Cleveland, Copenhagen, Dubai, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Lagos, Los Angeles, Lisbon, Madrid, Manila, Mexico City, Montreal, Rome, São Paulo, Shanghai, Sydney, Tbilisi, Seoul, Tokyo, Toronto, Usedom Island,[2]Vancouver.[3] History[edit] In 1943, the first New York Fashion Week was held, with one main purpose: to distract attention from French fashion during World War II, when workers in the fashion industry were unable to travel to Paris. This was an opportune moment, as for centuries designers in America had been thought to be reliant on the French for inspiration.[citation needed] The fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert organized an event she called 'Press Week' to showcase American designers for fashion journalists, who had previously ignored their works. The Press Week was a success, and, as a result, magazines like Vogue (which were normally filled with French designs) began to feature more and more American innovations. Until 1994, shows were held in different locations, such as hotels, or lofts. Eventually, after a structural accident at a Michael Kors show, the event moved to Bryant Park, behind the New York Public Library, where it remained until 2010, when the shows relocated to Lincoln Center. However, long before Lambert, there were fashion shows throughout America. In 1903, a New York City shop called Ehrich Brothers put on what is thought to have been the country's first fashion show to lure middle-class females into the store.[4] By 1910, many big department stores were holding shows of their own. It is likely that American retailers saw that they were called 'fashion parades' in Paris couture salons and decided to use the idea. These parades were an effective way to promote stores, and improved their status. By the 1920s, the fashion show had been used by retailers up and down the country. They were staged, and often held in the shop's restaurant during lunch or teatime. These shows were usually more theatrical than those of today, heavily based upon a single theme, and accompanied with a narrative commentary. The shows were hugely popular, enticing crowds in their thousands -- crowds so large, that stores in New York in the fifties had to obtain a license to have live models.

Legendary fashion designer Oscar de la Renta d

YOUR DESCRIPTION HAS REACHED THE LIMIT OF CHARACTERS ALLOWED AND WAS CUT. NEW YORK (AP) -- Oscar de la Renta, the worldly gentleman designer who shaped the wardrobe of socialites and Hollywood stars for more than four decades, has died. He was 82. De la Renta died at home Monday evening in Connecticut surrounded by family and friends and "more than a few dogs," according to a handwritten statement signed by his stepdaughter Eliza Reed Bolen and her husband, Alex Bolen. "While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much with us. Oscar's hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company," the statement said. "All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit. Through Oscar's example we know the way forward. We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar loved so much." The late `60s and early `70s were a defining moment in U.S. fashion as New York-based designers finally carved a look of their own that was finally taken seriously by Europeans. De la Renta and his peers, including the late Bill Blass, Roy Halston and Geoffrey Beene, defined American style - and their influence is still spotted today. De la Renta's specialty was eveningwear, though he also was known for chic daytime suits favored by the women who would gather at the Four Seasons or Le Cirque at lunchtime. His signature looks were voluminous skirts, exquisite embroideries and rich colors. Most recently, Amal Alamuddin wore a de la Renta-designed wedding dress when she married George Clooney. First ladies Laura Bush wore an icy blue gown by de la Renta to the 2005 inaugural ball and Hillary Rodham Clinton wore a gold de la Renta in 1997. On the red carpet at the Academy Awards, Penelope Cruz and Sandra Bullock were among the celebrities to don his feminine and opulent gowns. His clothes even were woven into episodes of "Sex and the City" with style icon character Carrie Bradshaw dropping his name - and comparing his designs to poetry. "We will miss Oscar's generous and warm personality, his charm, and his wonderful talents." Bush said in a statement. "My daughters and I have many fond memories of visits with Oscar, who designed our favorite clothes, including Jenna's wedding dress. We will always remember him as the man who made women look and feel beautiful." De la Renta's path to New York's Seventh Avenue took an unlikely route: He left his native Dominican Republic at age 18 to study painting in Spain but soon became sidetracked by fashion. The wife of the U.S. Ambassador to Spain saw some of his sketches and asked him to make a dress for her daughter - a dress that landed on the cover of Life magazine. That led to an apprenticeship with Cristobal Balenciaga, and then de la Renta moved to France to work for couture house Lanvin. By 1963, he was working for Elizabeth Arden couture in New York and in 1965 had launched his own label. He told the AP in 2004 that his Hispanic roots worked their way into his designs. "I like light, color, luminosity. I like things full of color and vibrant," he said. And while de la Renta made Manhattan his primary home, he often visited the Dominican Republic and kept a home there. Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour was a frequent visitor and she has said traveling with him was like traveling with the president. "He's a superstar," she said. He also had a country home in northwestern Connecticut. Gardening and dancing were among his favorite diversions from work. "I'm a very restless person. I'm always doing something. Fashion Kode 2014 connects rookie Korean designers with global buyers

Korean dramas and Korean pop music have made a name for themselves on the global stage in recent years. Is Korean fashion next? Those taking part in the country's largest fashion trade show... certainly think so. Our Park Ji-won reports from the scene. The next global trend to come out of Korea is believed to be K-fashion, following in K-pop's footsteps. This show is part of Korea's biggest fashion business market and trade fair, which aims to help the country's up-and-coming designers venture into the overseas market. EXO, one of the hottest K-pop idol groups around, attended the opening to boost exposure of K-fashion. "For designers, trade shows like this are considered the first step towards presenting their works on runways at major collections around the world." That's why young Korean designers like Kim Hee-jin participate in the fair, hoping it leads to lucrative opportunities. "In just a couple of hours, I was approached by foreign buyers from China and Italy. They said they like my designs, and it seems like contracts will soon follow." Influential foreign buyers think Korean designs have what it takes to thrive on the global market. "Back-to-basics in the colors and in the fabrics, but with this extreme care about details. So I think it reminds me of a little bit of Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh." Over a hundred-and-20 brands and designers participated in the three-day event, which acts as a sneak preview for some of the trends that may reappear during Seoul Fashion Week in October. Park Ji-won, Arirang News.
