Iran's Fashion Renaissance: VICE Reports

10:18
Click here to subscribe to VICE: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE Before Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, citizens weren't required to wear the Islamic cover known as the hijab and the country's fashion was almost identical to that of the United States and Europe. After the revolution, though, the hijab became required by law. Although the standard black hijab is still commonplace—especially in rural areas in the country—Iran has recently seen a fashion renaissance, and cities like Tehran are becoming home to new and innovative designers. The clothing may still have to respect the Islamic dress codes, but the bright colors and designs would never have been seen a decade ago in Iran. Last summer, VICE went to Tehran to attend the third annual Fajr Fashion Show and speak with some of Iran's new designers. The country's top officials—responsible for granting permission for the show—were all seated in the front row to show show their support. And to make sure the models were adhering to the country's law. Legendary fashion designer Oscar de la Renta d

00:24
YOUR DESCRIPTION HAS REACHED THE LIMIT OF CHARACTERS ALLOWED AND WAS CUT. NEW YORK (AP) -- Oscar de la Renta, the worldly gentleman designer who shaped the wardrobe of socialites and Hollywood stars for more than four decades, has died. He was 82. De la Renta died at home Monday evening in Connecticut surrounded by family and friends and "more than a few dogs," according to a handwritten statement signed by his stepdaughter Eliza Reed Bolen and her husband, Alex Bolen. "While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much with us. Oscar's hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company," the statement said. "All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit. Through Oscar's example we know the way forward. We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar loved so much." The late `60s and early `70s were a defining moment in U.S. fashion as New York-based designers finally carved a look of their own that was finally taken seriously by Europeans. De la Renta and his peers, including the late Bill Blass, Roy Halston and Geoffrey Beene, defined American style - and their influence is still spotted today. De la Renta's specialty was eveningwear, though he also was known for chic daytime suits favored by the women who would gather at the Four Seasons or Le Cirque at lunchtime. His signature looks were voluminous skirts, exquisite embroideries and rich colors. Most recently, Amal Alamuddin wore a de la Renta-designed wedding dress when she married George Clooney. First ladies Laura Bush wore an icy blue gown by de la Renta to the 2005 inaugural ball and Hillary Rodham Clinton wore a gold de la Renta in 1997. On the red carpet at the Academy Awards, Penelope Cruz and Sandra Bullock were among the celebrities to don his feminine and opulent gowns. His clothes even were woven into episodes of "Sex and the City" with style icon character Carrie Bradshaw dropping his name - and comparing his designs to poetry. "We will miss Oscar's generous and warm personality, his charm, and his wonderful talents." Bush said in a statement. "My daughters and I have many fond memories of visits with Oscar, who designed our favorite clothes, including Jenna's wedding dress. We will always remember him as the man who made women look and feel beautiful." De la Renta's path to New York's Seventh Avenue took an unlikely route: He left his native Dominican Republic at age 18 to study painting in Spain but soon became sidetracked by fashion. The wife of the U.S. Ambassador to Spain saw some of his sketches and asked him to make a dress for her daughter - a dress that landed on the cover of Life magazine. That led to an apprenticeship with Cristobal Balenciaga, and then de la Renta moved to France to work for couture house Lanvin. By 1963, he was working for Elizabeth Arden couture in New York and in 1965 had launched his own label. He told the AP in 2004 that his Hispanic roots worked their way into his designs. "I like light, color, luminosity. I like things full of color and vibrant," he said. And while de la Renta made Manhattan his primary home, he often visited the Dominican Republic and kept a home there. Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour was a frequent visitor and she has said traveling with him was like traveling with the president. "He's a superstar," she said. He also had a country home in northwestern Connecticut. Gardening and dancing were among his favorite diversions from work. "I'm a very restless person. I'm always doing something. ► yoox.com & SEPP Football Fashion presents #YOOXSOCCERCOUTURE | by yoox.com

01:16
http://yoox.ly/shopyoox ♯YOOXSOCCERCOUTURE While the best teams prepare for the 2014 World Championship in Brazil, yoox.com, in collaboration with Sepp magazine, lines up its very own fashion dream team: ten designers from ten different countries have created an exclusive collection of unisex, Italian-made sweatshirts, each featuring a custom print inspired by their native country. Three, two, one...kick-off! May the best one win! USA: OPENING CEREMONY The ultimate in insider retailing, Opening Ceremony created a suitably idiosyncratic vision of Old Glory's colors -- using erratic red, white and blue stripes -- for the World Championship. Designers Carol Lim and Humberto Leon know all about branding, so their team USA sweatshirt boasts their own enormous logo, along with a reminder that the label was founded in 2002. GERMANY: DAMIR DOMA Germany always shows up for the World Championship. No wonder the Bavarian Damir Doma chose an image of an eagle-- the symbol of liberty and victory. FRANCE: AMI The ultimate symbol of French pride is Le Coq, the strutting cockerel that represents the arrogance and self-confidence of the nation. The new darling of Paris menswear Alexandre Mattiussi -- who worked at Dior and Givenchy before launching his brand AMI -- combines his logo with Le Coq, cockily; excuse the pun, giving the bird a Gallic nose. ITALY: MSGM DJ turned designer Massimo Giorgetti's label MGSM is the hottest young look in Italy. Giorgetti is the new Fiorucci, and for the World Championship, he combines the Italian tricolor, a floral ball and an American football style M. SPAIN: AGATHA RUIZ DE LA PRADA Using the national colors of red and yellow, the Madrid designer's central graphic is a loving heart. AUSTRALIA: KSUBI Attention-grabbing Ksubi let 169 rats loose in their first runway show back in 2001, announcing the birth of an iconoclastic posh punk surfer style. For Brazil they use the green and yellow of both the Brazilian and Australian team colors with the ancient Roman warning X Non Plus Ultra -- in other words -- nothing further beyond. KOREA: JUUN.J Nicknamed the Tangeuk Tigers, South Korea proudly sport the big cat as their emblem. A key symbol in Korean culture, tigers are viewed as guardians warding off evil. Juun J., the heroic modernist tailor, lets a Siberian Tiger leap across his sweatshirt. CHINA: MASHA MA Masha Ma is the St Martins graduate from China causing quite a stir in Paris with her novel vision of modernist deconstruction. Masha's jersey for the tropical World Championship riffs on the red, white black combos of the collection she presented in March. Her Cubist collage hints of pagodas, soccer boots, an horizontal M and the spiky cacti that ripple through her oeuvre. NIGERIA: DURO OLOWU While playing on his country's tradition for graphic prints and his own unexpected color combos, Doru Oluwu makes the proud bird his centerpiece. BRAZIL: BARBARA CASASOLA Our Brazilian squad member is Barbara Casasola; who has been winning kudos for her fluid ladylike chic. For the summer games, her graphic collage of the Brazilian flag's three colors -- green, yellow and blue -- looks just right for the opening game -- Brazil vs. Croatia in Sao Paulo on June 12th. *** yoox.com, established in 2000, is the world's leading lifestyle e-store for multi-brand fashion, design and art. Kites: Making of Fancy Kite

The Indian kites have come a long way, from the time they were introduced into this country. The shape of the Indian fighter kite has not changed since, shaped like a rhombus or the diamond shape. Only different types of materials, sizes and decorations on the kites had lead to different varieties in kites. But now apart from the kites made specifically for the purpose of flying, kites are also being used for many other promotional purposes. These new forms are special kites, which have a lesser following, but nonetheless their presence is becoming noticeable. Fashion Kode 2014 connects rookie Korean designers with global buyers

01:57
Korean dramas and Korean pop music have made a name for themselves on the global stage in recent years. Is Korean fashion next? Those taking part in the country's largest fashion trade show... certainly think so. Our Park Ji-won reports from the scene. The next global trend to come out of Korea is believed to be K-fashion, following in K-pop's footsteps. This show is part of Korea's biggest fashion business market and trade fair, which aims to help the country's up-and-coming designers venture into the overseas market. EXO, one of the hottest K-pop idol groups around, attended the opening to boost exposure of K-fashion. "For designers, trade shows like this are considered the first step towards presenting their works on runways at major collections around the world." That's why young Korean designers like Kim Hee-jin participate in the fair, hoping it leads to lucrative opportunities. "In just a couple of hours, I was approached by foreign buyers from China and Italy. They said they like my designs, and it seems like contracts will soon follow." Influential foreign buyers think Korean designs have what it takes to thrive on the global market. "Back-to-basics in the colors and in the fabrics, but with this extreme care about details. So I think it reminds me of a little bit of Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh." Over a hundred-and-20 brands and designers participated in the three-day event, which acts as a sneak preview for some of the trends that may reappear during Seoul Fashion Week in October. Akosua Afriyie-Kumi: It's time for African fashion to shine

03:47
“Africa hasn’t been looked at as inspiration for beauty,” says Ghanaian fashion designer Akosua Afriyie-Kumi in this interview with Design Indaba in London. This is changing now, she says, especially among high-end fashion designers. Afriyie-Kumi’s own exuberant aesthetic, under her Accra-based label AAKS, draws on the colours of her country’s landscape and the patterns and resourceful lives of its local people. “I use different materials and create something new out of what we have in Ghana, making it modern,” she says of her raffia bags hand-woven by local women. Read our African Report about the designer here. Her bags, although contemporary in style, are the more traditional side of her brand. They encapsulate her core aesthetic, she says, which combines quality, craftsmanship and authenticity in contemporary African-inspired designs. The Kingston University graduate is currently working on her own print designs, which she describes as a “new kind of African print”. Her clothing range, in which the prints appear, uses an edgy but streamlined, commercially oriented approach. Afriyie-Kumi showcased her bags and clothing at the "Africa on the Catwalk" fashion show that was part of the recent Africa Utopia festival at London’s South Bank Centre. The recently launched raffia bags were also included in ethical design brand Shake the Dust’s Africa Calling exhibition at the festival and in its pop-up shop on Columbia Road in London’s East End. “African heritage plays a huge role in my work. It’s time for African fashion to really shine and show our culture.”

Designer Oscar de la Renta was mourned Tuesday in the Dominican Republic, as a native son who brought glamour and prestige to a largely poor country better known for baseball and beaches than elegant evening wear. The death of the style icon Monday at his home in Connecticut came as Dominican designers--some mentored and inspired by de la Renta--gathered in the capital for their country's Fashion Week, for which he provided advice over the years and where he showed off designs in 2010., Oscar de la Renta fan Sabrina Baldieri http://news.yahoo.com/fashion-icon-mourned-dominican-homeland-111235382.html http://www.wochit.com
