11-Year-Old Kid Gives Emotional Advice on Subway Platform | New York Post

02:24
Ciro Ortiz is not your typical middle schooler. At 11 years old, the Brooklyn-raised boy is not only already fending for himself but is giving back. Inspired by a desire to help, Ciro decided he would set up a stand and offer emotional advice to stressed-out New Yorkers off the Williamsburg L train line. He charges $2 a session, but it's clear his advice is worth a lot more. #subway #therapy #emotional #advice #therapist From "Subway riders are turning to this 11-year-old shrink for advice": https://nypost.com/2016/12/11/subway-riders-are-turning-to-this-11-year-old-shrink-for-advice/ Over the past nine Sundays, Ciro Ortiz, a 4-foot-8 Bushwick sixth-grader, has been counseling anxious Brooklynites at the Bedford L train stop. For $2 a pop, he offers five-minute “emotional advice” sessions. His office hours are noon to 2 p.m. “It’s a good way to give back and make money,” the 11-year-old told The Post. One recent afternoon, a couple stopped by Ciro’s “Peanuts”-esque card table for some marital counseling. The husband was unhappy that his wife had recently gone vegan. “I told him that she didn’t get mad at him for eating meat,” Ciro said. “She likes to eat what she wants and he likes to eat whatever he wants so they’re just gonna have to deal with it.” In the past, Ciro has been bullied at school, and that inspired him to offer counseling instead of channeling his entrepreneurial tendencies into a lemonade stand. “Ciro is really sensitive and he’s had a hard time,” his mother, Jasmine Aequitas, a 35-year-old poet, told The Post. “The first day he was out there [on the subway platform, giving counseling], he was very nervous and unsure of himself . . . A few Sundays later he’s come back saying, ‘I’ve met so many wonderful people. I’m gonna end up having so many friends.’ ” “He’s always been much more mature than whatever grade he was in,” added his father, Adam Ortiz, 36 and a nonprofit marketing director. On a good Sunday, Ciro rakes in $50, but he has no plans to pursue a career as a psychotherapist; he wants to be a video-game developer. A student at MS 577, he “hates” school but is on the honor roll and excels in science and English classes. The kiddie counselor thinks he got his wisdom from his parents, who have always encouraged him to be kind to everyone and to pursue his dreams — even if it means that they have to spend their Sundays hanging out in a subway station as Ciro works. Clients say the young boy’s advice is right on the money. “Somebody came up to us and said that what he told her is what she’d been feeling in her gut that whole time,” Adam said. Ciro loves “Minecraft” and comic books, but he hasn’t been on a shopping spree with his earnings. “He buys food or snacks at school for kids who can’t afford them,” Adam said. “He’s not selfish with his money.” The most common problem he’s seen, Ciro said, is adults having trouble dealing with change. “They feel a certain way in the past and when they look [back] in hindsight, they say things were so much better back then,” he said. His advice? “We have to accept [change]. It’s going to happen — it’s always going to happen. Life is always changing.” The New York Post is your source for breaking news, news about New York, sports, business, entertainment, opinion, real estate, culture, fashion, and more. Hilarious Shoe Shiner Makes $900 Per Day Shaming Shoes on the Street | New York Post

02:15
Don Ward — whose stand is prominently perched at 47th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan — jokingly chides Midtown schlubs when their hooves aren’t up to par. Ward says he first decided to go into the shoeshine business when one of his former colleagues made more money in one day polishing than he did all week at a photo job he previously had. Ward has been shining shoes and cracking jokes for 17 years. A Midtown heckler claims he makes up to $900 per day shaming shoes, then shining them. “How do you catch fish? You’ve gotta use good bait,” Ward told The Post. “A lot of people walk by and they’re in their own little bubble. I tell jokes,” said Ward, adding that he’s always looking for the dirtiest pair of shoes he can find. Ward explained that his job also affords him independence. “I don’t have no incompetent boss giving me orders. I have no backstabbing co-workers trying to get brownie points. I’m free, ” Ward told The Post. The New York Post is your source for breaking news, news about New York, sports, business, entertainment, opinion, real estate, culture, fashion, and more. Lottery winner claims $168 million Mega Millions jackpot after credit card default | New York Post

02:05
New York Lottery's Yolanda Vega announces that former MSG employee Jimmy Groves won the Mega Millions lottery prize. #lottery #winner #MegaMillions From "Once-broke Harlem man in the money": https://nypost.com/2009/09/09/once-broke-harlem-man-in-the-money/ What’s in this Harlem man’s wallet? He says $168 million. James “Jimmy” Groves — a Madison Square Garden laborer who recently defaulted on his Capital One credit-card debt — yesterday told The Post that he’s the person who won half of a $336 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot two weeks ago. “It feels great!” said Groves, 49, near his home in the crime-riddled Grant Houses. “I’m going to Disney World! “I was down and out, and I didn’t have a dime in my pocket. I asked for a lottery ticket, in 26 installment payments. And the next day, I won $166 million. “Then the lottery people called me back and told me it was [actually] $168 million,” said the father of two, who has not been publicly confirmed by lottery officials as the winner. Groves has yet to collect on what would be yearly payments of $6.47 million before taxes. But he is already learning that with all that money comes mighty big headaches. He said that since telling family and pals he won, he’s been fielding up to 40 calls each morning from friends, acquaintances and others begging for cash. “It’s hectic,” said Groves, who had been working the midnight shift at Madison Square Garden stacking chairs. “I wake up every morning, and everyone is on me like stink on s- – -. “Right now, I’m frustrated. I feel like my family is in a position of jeopardy,” he said. “This is a dangerous neighborhood. “It’s a dream turned into a nightmare. Winning is the beginning. Living with it is pure hell. “I know people say, ‘Give me that hell.’ Be careful what you wish for — you just might get it.” That said, Groves was admittedly living “paycheck to paycheck” before the drawing and could definitely use the money. Court records show that Capital One — the credit-card issuer whose motto is “What’s in your wallet?” — in March obtained a judgment of nearly $4,000 against Groves for unpaid principal and interest. State lottery officials yesterday refused to confirm whether Groves is the person who won the half-share of the Aug. 28 Mega Millions drawing . The winning ticket was bought at Fordham Grocery and Convenience Store in The Bronx and bore the numbers 1-17-31-37-54, with the Mega Ball 31. The other winner of the jackpot — the second largest in Mega Millions history — bought that ticket in California. “I can’t confirm anything until we actually have a public check presentation. We’re in the process of putting together a date, a place or time that works for everybody,” said Lottery spokeswoman Carolyn Hapeman. Sources at the Garden said Groves has told them he won the lottery and has not been at work since the drawing. A Garden spokesman declined to comment. Groves’ neighbors have been buzzing for days about his reputed staggering good fortune at Grant Houses, where elevators reek of urine and most prior news stories mentioning the project have been about violent crimes there. One neighbor said Groves last week was toting a store sign bearing the lottery prize amount. “He told me, ‘I just won $166 million,’ ” Fred Reid, 78, recalled. “I didn’t believe him, but I said congratulations.” Another resident, Karen Jefferson, said the win is “a blessing for him . . . He can move his family up, out of here.” She said Groves was known for trying “to get people in the neighborhood jobs at Madison Square Garden.” The New York Post is your source for breaking news, news about New York, sports, business, entertainment, opinion, real estate, culture, fashion, and more. Urban Miner Finds Gold and Diamonds with Tweezers and a Butter Knife | New York Post

02:06
A Queens man has discovered enough hidden treasure — bits of diamonds, rubies, platinum and gold — on the gritty sidewalks of Midtown’s Diamond District to make a living. #gold #miner #diamonds #mining #prospecting #prospector #gems #jewelry #urban #nyc #panning From 'Man digs for treasure on the streets of NYC' - https://nypost.com/2011/06/20/got-his-mined-in-the-gutter/ “The streets of 47th Street are literally paved with gold,” a giddy Raffi Stepanian, 43, of Whitestone told The Post last week when a reporter discovered him on all fours — armed with tweezers and a butter knife — digging through cracks in the sidewalk in a driving rainstorm. The freelance diamond setter explained that he was sifting through “very valuable” New York City mud for tiny diamond and ruby chips, bits of platinum, white-gold industrial loops for jewelry assembly, and gold earring backs and loops from broken chains, watches, brooches and necklaces — all carelessly dropped and now his to mine. “Material falls off clothes, on the bottom of shoes, it drops off jewelry, and it falls in the dirt and sticks to the gum on the street,” he explained. “The percentage of gold out here on the street is greater than the amount of gold you would find in a mine … It comes close to a mother lode because in the street, you’re picking up gold left by the industry.” With a reporter in tow, Stepanian took his Styrofoam cup of mud to a friend’s polishing studio on 47th Street near Sixth Avenue and demonstrated how he “pans” the precious particles like an old-fashioned prospector — by hand, in a small metal basin with water and a strainer. Over six days, he says, he collected enough gold for two sales totaling $819 on 47th Street — where he first got the idea to mine the sidewalks after finding gold scraps on the floor of a diamond exchange. “The stones are already cut and manufactured — it’s a step above a mine,” he added. “I’m finding them already cut and polished.” “It’s the same principle as collecting cans on the street and redeeming them for nickels. It’s redemption of reusable gold. This is the gold that has been on this street for 60 years. I know how to look, and I know where to look for it.” Onlookers were amazed at the urban prospector. Young elephant survives attack by 14 Lions Young elephant survives attack by 14 Lions Read the full story here: https://nypost.com/2014/11/11/feisty-baby-elephant-fends-off-attack-by-14-lions/ Who says elephants don’t have thick skin? After straying from his mother, a 1-year-old elephant survived a vicious attack by 14 lions at the Norman Carr Safaris Chinzombo Camp in Zambia. Clearly outnumbered, the baby elephant managed to get away unscathed despite having three of the lionesses on his back at one point. The dramatic incident was captured on video when journalist Jesse Nash, Long Island University Art Professor Dan Christoffel, Naturalist Steve Baker and Australian TV personality Nina Karnikowski embarked on a game drive through the safari, stumbling upon the site. “In the 30-plus years I have been a safari guide in Zambia at the Luangwe Park, never have I seen anything like this,” said Innocent, a top safari guide who works with Norman Carr Safaris and drove the group to the site. “We were all so worried the baby elephant would be killed right before us.” The baby elephant has since reunited with his herd and now bears a heroic new nickname. “We’ve named the little fella Hercules. What a fighter.” The New York Post is your source for breaking news, news about New York, sports, business, entertainment, opinion, real estate, culture, fashion, and more.
